In June, 2026, you’ll have a choice in the NY Senate 54 Democratic primary, so be sure to vote! The race is between Michael Mills (Canandaigua) and Scott Comegys (Wayne County), both vying for an opportunity to unseat Republican Pam Helming.

Michael Mills formally announced his Senate run on September 24 in the Commons of Canandaigua (Ontario County). Mills is an elected member of Canandaigua City Council and has experience working with local and New York State governments to support businesses and improve our communities. Mills owns a communications consulting firm and describes himself as a “small business owner who has spent nearly 30 years tackling critical policy issues like water quality, climate change, healthcare access, protecting farmers, investing in businesses and empowering consumers.” Mills points to his municipal policy experience. In addition to his current post as Ward 1 representative in Canandaigua, he formerly was a member of the Town of Canandaigua Economic Development Committee, vice chair of the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and executive director of the Geneva Business Improvement District. Mills his a graduate of the Ontario County Citizens Academy. Michael authored the book “Battling Democracy’s Decline” based upon his graduate research into the Civil Rights Movement and his civic service. He lives with his wife and young son in Canandaigua.

Michael Mills will challenge Scott Comegys in the Democratic primary.

Scott Comegys has managed operations from retail to movie theaters to construction agencies and formerly served as a facility manager for Strong Memorial Hospital. He has worked in the public sector as a clerk to the Palmyra Assessor and was certified as a NYS Citizen Public Health Leader during the Covid Pandemic. Comegys describes himself as a community organizer, helping to promote Women’s Rights, the Rights of People of Color, Labor Rights, the New York Health Act, Justice Reform, Sustainable Agriculture, and Climate Justice. He earned his degree in Sustainability Studies in 2016. He and his wife, Bethany, own an alpaca farm in Palmyra, NY. This will be Comegys second attempt at unseating Pam Helming for the Senate. He achieved 35% of the vote in 2024 in this Republican district.

The Town of East Bloomfield is located within NY Senate 54th. District 54 includes ALL of Ontario, Wayne, and Livingston counties PLUS the Towns of Chili, Wheatland, Riga, Rush and Mendon in Monroe County. 

If you live in any of these towns or counties, you’ll have two great choices for your Democratic candidate! Get out and vote!
