Important dates to consider for the 2026 Election
New York heads to the polls in 2026 to choose a Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller, and all 26 U.S. House seats. With several of the nation’s most competitive House districts, New York could help decide control of Congress. Here’s every date that matters for the 2026 cycle.
- October 24, 2026: Voter Registration Deadline: General
- October 24, 2026: Mail Ballot Application Deadline: General (online/mail)
- Oct 24 to Nov 1, 2026: Early Voting: General
- November 3, 2026: General Election Day · 6am to 9pm
Polls open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day. New York does not require photo ID to vote; first-time voters who registered by mail without ID may be asked to show it. If you’re in line by 9 p.m., you may cast your ballot.
Primary Election held June 23
The Primary election on June 23rd set candidates for this November’s general election, and were held for the Democratic, Republican and other parties. Winning Democratic candidates are held on our 2026 Midterm Elections entry of our Local Candidates page.
Petitions for the Ontario County Democratic Committee must be submitted by March 30, 2026.
For the 2026 election cycle, candidates and committee members seeking to appear on the Democratic ballot in Ontario County could have their petitions signed by local Democrats from February 27 through March 30, 2026. All completed petitions must be filed with the Board of Elections by the end of this period to be valid for the November election ballot ontariocountydemocrats.com.
- Caucus Nominations: Party caucuses in Ontario County were held between February 24 and July 23, 2026, allowing enrolled Democrats to nominate candidates for local offices

- Filing Review: Once petitions are submitted, the Board of Elections conducts a prima facie review to ensure compliance with New York State Election Law. Candidates may be asked to provide additional documentation before the filing is officially accepted
- Eligibility: Only registered Democrats in Ontario County may sign designating petitions for Democratic candidates

Submitting petitions by the March 30 deadline ensures candidates are eligible for consideration and avoids disqualification due to late filing.
February 14 deadline for primary registration
To be eligible to vote in a Primary in 2026 (for Governor, House, local, etc.), a person must be:
1. registered to vote (check at Vote.org; or voterlookup.elections.ny.gov or call County Board of Elections for assistance)
2. be registered in a Political Party. If you are a “BLANK” or unaffiliated voter, you cannot vote in a primary. Change party affiliation by 2/14/2026
THE DEADLINE: Voter must be registered AND in a party by February 14.
If you are a “Blank” — you must switch to a political party BY FEBRUARY 14, 2026
Primaries are how candidates are selected. If you want “better candidates” then you must do your job and vote in the Primaries!
Primaries have historically low turn out and even one vote can make a difference.
